MBA Boot Camp: Marketing Strategy & Planning (5.5)
Concepts & Vocabulary
Situation Analysis: The first step in any marketing plan, often using a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) to understand where the company currently stands.
SMART Goals: Objectives that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
The Marketing Plan: A comprehensive document that outlines a company's overall marketing effort.
Core Lesson: Pulling it All Together
Strategy is simply a plan of action designed to achieve a major goal. A professional Marketing Plan follows a very specific logical flow. It relies on everything you’ve learned over the last two weeks:
Situation Analysis: Where are we right now? (SWOT). Who are our competitors?
Objectives: What do we want to achieve? (Must be SMART: "Increase online sales by 15% by Q4," not "Get more sales.")
Strategy (STP): How will we get there? (Who is our Target segment? What is our Positioning?)
Tactics (The 4Ps): What are the specific actions? (What is the Product? What is the Price? Where is the Place? What is the Promotion?)
Control & Metrics: How will we measure success? (CAC, LTV, Conversion Rates).
The MBA Insight: Most bad marketing fails because it skips steps 1, 2, and 3, and jumps straight to step 4 (Tactics). A CEO will say, "We need a TikTok account!" That is a tactic. A good MBA marketer will ask: "Wait. What is our objective? Is our target demographic even on TikTok? Does that match our positioning?" Strategy always dictates tactics.
Application & Reflection
The Mini Marketing Plan: Imagine a fictional, upscale coffee shop is opening directly across the street from where you live. Write a 4-sentence marketing plan for them:
Objective: (One SMART goal for their first month).
Target: (Who are they trying to reach?)
Positioning: (Why are they better than Starbucks?)
Tactic: (One specific promotional idea to get people in the door).
