I Will Remember You EP (2006)
I went through quick phases with my music, especially in the early days of my songwriting. Around 2006 I discovered Gillian Welch and really loved the slow vibe of her music. I couldn’t figure out how to sing with it, which was fine. I was most interested in capturing the feeling of the music, so these are entirely instrumentals.
My process was to create a slow-core base, something peaceful and ruminative. Then I’d solo on top of it right after I recorded the initial part. You can tell that I don’t really have a plan with most of these tracks and am doing it quickly. But’s that’s part of their searching charm, in my opinion. Nevertheless, “I Will Remember You” clicked into place in a way that I can’t explain, and it remains one of my favorite songs from my 20s. Really, it’s one of my favorite songs I’ve ever recorded. It so perfectly captures the feeling I had at the time, as I was grieving the loss of someone. It’s uncanny to me.
This 5-song project lasted about a week. But it’s cool that I can share it now and treat it like a mini-milestone. If I tried to recreate this vibe now it simply would not be the same. Life is a strange and beautiful thing.
