MBA Boot Camp: Quality Control (6.4)

Concepts & Vocabulary

  • TQM (Total Quality Management): A management framework based on the belief that an organization can build long-term success by having all its members focus on improving quality and delivering customer satisfaction.

  • Six Sigma: A data-driven business method used to improve quality by finding and removing defects, reducing process variation, and maximizing efficiency. Its numerical goal is to allow no more than 3.4 defects per million opportunities. The framework relies on statistical tools and structured problem-solving steps to boost customer satisfaction and profits

  • Defect: Any instance where a product or service fails to meet customer specifications.

Core Lesson: Quality is Consistency

In business, "quality" doesn't necessarily mean "luxury." A McDonald's Big Mac is a high-quality product because it is consistent. A Big Mac in Tokyo tastes exactly the same as a Big Mac in Chicago. Operations teams use rigorous statistical tools to ensure that every single unit produced falls within an acceptable range of variation.

Bringing it to Marketing: We usually think of defects as broken widgets on an assembly line. But marketing campaigns have supply chains and processes, too. A marketing team produces assets (emails, ads, landing pages, social posts).

If an operations team has a 5% defect rate, the factory is in crisis. Yet, marketing teams often launch campaigns with massive "defects" that ruin the ROI.

A marketing quality control checklist covers 3 core areas: targeting and links, content and design, and compliance and technical setup.

Targeting and Links

  • Audience segments: verify the correct email lists, user segments, or target geolocations are selected.

  • Personalization tags: test names, dynamic content blocks, and fallback text to ensure no broken [First Name] variables appear.

  • Link verification: click every single URL to confirm landing pages load fast, tracking UTM parameters are appended, and destination URLs work on mobile.

Content and Design

  • Spelling and grammar: proofread all headings, body text, and call-to-action (CTA) buttons.

  • Visual asset check: confirm all images, logos, and alt-text load correctly in both dark and light modes.

  • Rendering test: preview the campaign across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices to ensure a clean layout.

Compliance and Technical Setup

  • Unsubscribe link: verify the opt-out mechanism is visible and operational.

  • Legal requirements: check compliance for privacy laws, disclaimers, and required physical business addresses.

  • Send configuration: double-check the sender name, reply-to address, subject line, and preheader text before scheduling a test send.
