MBA Boot Camp: Mastering Business Models (1.2)
Week 1, Day 2: Business Models
Concepts & Vocabulary
Business Model: The fundamental logic of how an organization creates, delivers, and captures value. In simple terms: How does this company make money?
Value Proposition: The core promise of value to be delivered to the customer. It's the primary reason a prospect should buy from you.
Monetization: The process of turning a non-revenue-generating item or service into cash (e.g., YouTube monetizing free videos by running ads).
Core Lesson
The Business Model Canvas
Before you can market a business, you have to understand how it functions. The modern MBA standard for mapping this out is the Business Model Canvas (BMC), created by Alexander Osterwalder. It breaks any business down into 9 building blocks:
Customer Segments: Who are we solving a problem for?
Value Proposition: What exact problem are we solving or need are we fulfilling?
Channels: How do we deliver our product/message to the customer? (e.g., retail stores, website).
Customer Relationships: What kind of relationship does the customer expect? (e.g., automated, personal assistance).
Revenue Streams: How do we get paid? (e.g., subscription, one-time sale, licensing).
Key Resources: What assets do we need to make this work? (e.g., software, warehouses, intellectual property).
Key Activities: What are the most important things we must do? (e.g., manufacturing, platform management).
Key Partnerships: Who do we need to work with? (e.g., suppliers, delivery partners).
Cost Structure: What are our major expenses?
Takeaway for Marketers: Marketing usually lives in blocks 1, 2, 3, and 4. If you understand these blocks, your marketing strategy will write itself.
Application & Reflection
Mental Exercise: Think of a company you use every single day—like Spotify, Amazon, or Netflix. Pick one, and try to quickly identify just three parts of their Business Model Canvas:
What is their Value Proposition? (Why do you use them?)
What is their Revenue Stream? (How exactly do they get your money?)
What is a Key Resource they absolutely must have to survive?
